ITC at SCA Paddle 2011 Event

Over the weekend of 22/23 October, first aid awarding body ITC had a very succesful stand at the Scottish Canoe Association Paddle 2011 event at the Bell's Sport Centre, Perth. Interest was good especialy from those who knew the BCU/SCA insructor first aid standards change in January next year, and the requirement will be for a 16 hour outdoor first aid course.

ITC have 2 options to meet this demand: the most common being the ITC SQA accredited level 5 award in outdoor first aid, a 2 unit award with unit credits, of interest for those who are maybe undertaking other awards with unit credit. The alternative is the ITC 16 hour Outdoor First Aid cert of competence (Emergency Incident Management)

There was interest from clubs and groups for both the above and also for many who were interested in the 2 day provider induction, which brings people onboard with ITC and helps, through a mentoring process, to get individuals into a position of being able to set up and run courses themselves, commercially or within their club or group

Next provider induction in Scotland will be 10/11 December, near Inverness

New for September 2011 from ITC, delivered by Rubicon, 4 hour non assessed courses of attendance, plus an 18 hour course for people who wish to train as first aiders for community events (Public Event First Aid).

These have been developed in response to demand and the current economic climate. Many community groups and event organsiers are finding it more and more expensive to enagage the services of the Voluntary Aid Societies or are finding that the Societies are very busy and not available (due to the growth of fund raising events especially). ITC have developed a new 3 day (18 hour course) to meet the requirements and circumstances for such events, and a cost effective way for groups to train and have ongoing support for their own first aiders. Rubicon are also offering an option of providing first aid instructors as first adiers for event cover, or an instructor to co-ordinate local community event first aiders, operating under our insurance.

The 4 hour non assessed courses of attendance only, are for those individuals, organisations and situations where some first aid training and awarness is desirable or required. Courses can be run in a morning or afternoon, or over 2 evenings, and include First Aid for Sport, Outdoor Activities, Carers, home holiday and family. Manuals can be bought as an optional extra, all of which helps keep the price down to a minimum level. Please note these course do not meet Statutuory Regulatory requirements for work.

During June a group of motorcyclists will be riding from Berwick on Tweed to Lands End to raise money for cancer relief in their area. Being keen bikers ourselves and having seen their poster we decided the least we could do was sponsor the group £30 for their efforts. One aim of the route was to ride through towns on the way which began with the letters of Berwick on Tweed, in that order. One way to plan an interesting route. Anyone in the Berwick area should contact Berwick and District Cancer Support group at 5 Tweed Square, Berwick for more details of the charity and the ride.

Saturday 22 May saw members of WHAM as they are known train on the ITC Emeregency First Aid for Bikers course, which concentrates on what to do during the first 10 to 15 minutes of an RTC. Particular emphasis is placed on when it would be reasonable to move someone, and in the case of a biker, when and how to remove a safety helmet. One of the requests was a schedule for self directed practice for the group and also the possibility of some sort of refresher (not a whole day) for the 18 month point of certficate life span. So, somethings for us to consider.

On Monday 19 April 2010 there will be discussion held on the Radio Four lunchtime programme "You and Yours" about the state of first aid training and the industry as it currently stands. Featured on the show will be former HSE Head of First Aid Ian Kershaw. Both Ian Moor of ITC and Mark Harris at Rubicon were consulted in detail by the show for the event on Monday, and Mark was invited to be live on air, unfortunately not being able to make it as he would be on a train at the time of the live show. Should be worth a listen and we are sure it will result in a robust and stimulating discussion and response!!!
