First Aid at Work. (FAW)

First Aid at Work is designed to enable employers and organisations to meet their Health and Safety obligations, for the provision of first aid to employees.

This duty of care can be extended to members of the public who are on the employers premises.

First Aid at Work (24 hours) is the current initial qualifying course, or must be undertaken by those whose certificates have lapsed.

This will be replaced by a new 18 hour (3 day) course from Oct 2009.

First Aid at Work Refresher is the 12 hour current refresher course, which re-validates the First Aid at Work qualification.

Ideally this should be completed within 3 years of the initial 4 day course, or previous refresher training. However, there is a period of 28 days grace at the end of the 3 year period to allow refresher training to take place.

If re-training is not completed within the 28 day grace period, then the full 24 hour course must be undertaken again.

Appointed Persons training is not a First Aid at Work qualification, and the training is not regulated or overseen by the HSE.

Appointed Person training is not compulsory. It is only a recommendation, and is ideally suited for those who work in low risk environments or small organisations. The HSE recommendations for the ?Appointed Person? (AP) can usually be met by attending a half-day or one day course. Please contact us to discuss your requirements if not sure.

A new first aid at work qualification comes into existence on 01 October 2009.

The Emergency First Aider at Work. This course is linked to revisions to the HSE risk assessment table. This table is normally seen connected to first aid in the work place, which now becomes an assessment of 'Hazard' at work.
Assessments being low hazard or high hazard. The new table gives options for ?Appointed Persons? (training by choice, not a requirement), Emergency First Aider at Work (EFAW) or First Aider at Work (FAW).

Please Note:

There will also be a strong recommendation for EFAW and FAW to do a once yearly half day update.

Any provider may deliver this training, it will not be regulated by HSE.

EFAW Emergency First Aid at Work (1 day of 6 contact hours).

This course replaces The old Emergency Action First Aid course from 1st October 2009.

EFAW Emergency First Aid at Work (1 day of 6 contact hours). The course normally runs over 7 or 8 hours including breaks.

The content is prescribed by the HSE and all candidates must attend the full 6-hours contact time in order to fulfill the qualification 'license to practice' requirement. As well as a full attendance requirement each candidate is continually assessed on each section of the programme.
