Wilderness First Aid courses, can be described as emergency care for remote locations. It is not about advanced skills but being confident and competent in using basic skills, and in adaptation and improvisation.
The outline courses structure and teaching methods are REC and ITC, both HSE Licensed organisations in the UK, with additional course content from the Wilderness Medical Society programmes from the United States.
Wilderness can be defined as being more then one hour from definitive medical care.
These courses focus on practical skills, individual and team. Emphasis is placed on application of these skills out of doors in realistic scenarios, sometimes using trained casualties with simulated illnesses and injuries. We will look at first aid practice, first aid equipment, and the use of other outdoor and safety equipment that you may have with you.
